In this weeks session we began using Cameras (Canon 7D) to practice making pixilation films, we were split into two groups. I manned the camera and equipment and the others acted out our scene. During the process we had a lot of Technical difficulties that most were out of our control so we didnt have as much time as we planned to make the piece. however what we created i feel was a good use of the Camera, and also it allowed us to create something visually interesting! Hopefully next time we wont have as many problems and will be able to expand on what we learnt in this session
Here is my brief for the week, for this we had to design a set based on the film title, The Accountant, i went for a very steampunk vibe to it, using dramatic lighting to create a ambience in the scene.
I was not present during the green screen lecture, so was unable to complete the task set for that week.
In this lesson we learnt about the use of colour in animation and film, we were told to find a film that shows a good example of colour. For this i picked one of the brand new animated films, 'Kubo and Two String'. I feel that this film shows a good use of colour, while watching the film, light is used to portray the mood of the scene, for example, when the bad guys are present, the tone is very monochromatic and dull, whereas when kubo and his parents are together, the light is generally very vibrant, to give a sense of positivism and hope. Below is 3 example screenshots from the film that show 3 different palettes used during the course of the film.
In this second lesson we focused on the concept of Framing for four main reasons:
- To direct attention
- To represent experience
- To identify perspective
- To create mood and atmosphere
We were also told to focus on the rule of 3rd while framing using horizontal lines to help use compose the desired shot. We were also shown some examples of different camera angles and how to show how a camera moves on a 2D storyboard, Having learnt this, for our 2nd brief we were asked to create a short storyboard using the title 'The Sock'. The main focus of this brief was to work on the framing of the story while using characters to drive narrative. In my piece i wanted to add a comical effect to the way some of the shots were composed, to do this, i tried to always have the goal of the story in frame, while trying to follow the rule of 3rds. I also tried to use Extreme closeups and pans to try and create Dramatisation.

Concept designs for my character and the layout of the room
For our first lesson, we learnt about the importance of Semiotics in Film making and Animation. The practice of using signs to drive a narrative. Semiotics is comprised of 3 parts, Sign, Signifier and Signified. to Practice this technique we were told to create a short story using the words 'Freedom', 'Discombobulated' and 'Uncertainty' to portray 'Coming to University'. Here is my piece to respond to the brief, i wanted to use the character to drive the narrative while also adding in the use of Semiotics, some more literal examples than others, i feel that with more time the ideas could be expanded upon and fleshed out, but i was pleased with the initial concepts.
